The Thrill of the Hunt in Mile High Country

In our neck of the woods...

Coulter Lake Guest Ranch & Outfitters always has something exciting and fun happening. Here's your chance to hear all about it.

2009 Hunting Seasons

the Colorado Department of Wildlife 2009 hunting seasons are as follows:

  • August 29th - September 27th -- Archery
  • September 12th - 20th -- Muzzle Loader
  • October 10th - 14th -- 1st Rifle
  • October 17th - 25th -- 2nd Rifle
  • October 31st - November 6th -- 3rd Rifle
  • November 11th - 15th -- 4th Rifle

Elk and mule deer require you to submit an application to draw tags for archery, muzzle loader, 1st and 4th rifle seasons. You can buy bull elk tags over the counter for 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons in unit #33.

The information on leftover tags will be available at the end of July. Phone orders for these tags begin on August 10th with on-line ordering available August 11th. Be sure to see if you can pick up that extra buck, doe, or cow tag!

For the most up to date information on applying for licenses in Colorado go to Colorado Division of Wildlife–Total Licensing or call 1-800-244-5613.

Almost Hunting Time...

Hunting season is right around the corner now. Rifle season starts October 10th and we have some cabins and a drop camp still available for the the rfle seasons. Remember that bull tags can be purchased over the counter for the 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons in Unit #33. We're seeing good numbers of deer and elk, it appears they managed last winter in good shape. If you are still looking for a place to go this year give us a call.

For those of you planning a hunt it is time to be preparing your gear and yourself. You should have started an exercise program to get in shape, especially if you will be coming from a lower elevation. Coulter Lake is at 8100 feet and you will be doing a lot of walking between 7000 and 9500 feet. Daily walks, biking, or swimming are all great ways to get in shape. Don’t forget to do some weight training or carry some weights with you on walks to simulate your gun or pack.

On your equipment, spend some time at the shooting range with the gun you will be using. You should sight in your gun at 200 yards and then shoot at a variety of ranges so you are comfortable. Practice with a range finder and GPS, be sure to have your first aid kit together, extra batteries, etc. Now is the time to sort through what you need and enjoy the pre-hunt preparation. We look forward to seeing old and new friends here this fall!

Limited availability, so don't delay...

If you are interested in an elk or deer hunt for 2009, call today as we have limited spaces for both lodge and drop camp based hunts. We have changed our pricing structure for 2009 with a “success fee” which is only paid for a successful harvest! We hope this eliminates some of the cost concerns given the current economy.

We do offer discounted rates for groups of 4 or more hunters, youth hunters, and returning hunters for guided packages. It's our pleasure to work with parents to share an elk or deer hunt with their youth hunter. What better way to create an incredible memory in Mile High Country that will last you and your young hunter a lifetime.

  Guide School Partnership

When Tim and Sue Weller joined the staff at Coulter Lake a partnership was also formed with their Guide School Program from the Appalachia Spring Ranch Wilderness Adventure School.

We now offer a program with both a Colorado and a Pennsylvania base for training. The school offers individual training in:

  • Horsemanship
  • Customer Service
  • Packing Horses
  • Drop Camp Setup
  • Working a Pack Team
  • Wilderness Survival
  • Field Dressing Game and More

Students will also receive their first aid and CPR training which is a requirement for guiding. Modules can take from two to four weeks.

New this year will also be a Camp Cooking School. This program is designed to teach students the basics of cooking for a drop camp in a wilderness setting. You will learn how to cook on camp stoves as well as dutch ovens.

Rates for the Guide School are noted below and include room & board:

  • Wrangler Program -- 2 Weeks - $1,600 per student
  • Master Guide Program -- 4 Weeks - $3,500 per student
  • Camp Cook Program -- 2 Weeks - $1,600 per student

Courses will be run in May, June, and July depending on location and availability. Assistance will be given to all graduates in finding jobs with outfitters.

Tim has been a teacher for more than 30 years and has over 9 years of first-hand experience with outfitting. He's run his own outfitting business as well as gaining experience through working for several Colorado outfitters.
