Coulter Lake Guest Ranch & Outfitters is located in western Colorado, 3 miles into the White River National Forest and 20 miles northeast of the town of Rifle.  The ranch is at 8,100 feet surrounded by valleys, drainages with dark timber, aspen stands, and high meadows.  Hunting areas range from 7,000 to 9.500 feet.  The ranch is located in GMU #33, home to elk, mule deer, black bear, Miriam turkey, and grouse.

Coulter Lake’s outfitting permit is #2511.  Our permit allows us to outfit within the WRNF and GMU #33 from Rt. 13/789 on the west then nearly 20 miles to Meadow Lake & Creek on the east and south to the WRNF boundary.  We have access to approximately 1200 acres of private land.

Elk Hunting 101 – Elk Hunting Basics
Coulter Lake Guest Ranch is offering a summer course on elk hunting skills. We are offering both a 2 and 4 day class that will cover elk habitat & their habits, scouting techniques, elk calling, hunting strategies, & discussion on gear, scents, guns, & optics. All participants stay at the ranch in their own cabin. The short course is $795 per person and covers 2 full days of training and 3 nights lodging. The longer course is $1,295 per person and covers 4 full days of training and 5 nights. All your meals are included as well.

Come alone, with your hunting group, or bring guests! Dates are flexible and can be structured around your availability. This is a great way to learn how to scout a new area for elk and prepare for the hunt with hands on experience. Call 970-625-1473 or e-mail us at

Game Management Unit #33

The White River National Forest is over 2 million acres.  The WRNF is bordered to the north by the Flattops Wilderness area and to the west by the Peance Creek area.  This area is home to the second largest elk herd in the state.  There is a resident herd in and around the ranch which is supplemented by elk moving to their winter grounds during November.  Mule deer are plentiful as are black bear and turkeys.

This is a large unit north of Rifle consisting of the WRNF, BLM, and private land.  You must apply for all elk, mule deer, and bear tags.  However, bull elk tags can be purchased over the counter for the 2nd & 3rd rifle seasons.  Most tags can be drawn with few if any points except for black powder bull tags (9 non-resident & 4 resident) and 4th rifle season mule deer tags (4+ points for non-residents).  Archery tags normally take 2 or fewer points to draw.

Rocky Mountain Hunting

Weather conditions vary greatly from archery hunting in September through late rifle hunts in November.  September hunts may be in dry, sunny days in the 60s while November hunts may be in single digit temperatures with lots of snow.  The first snows will normally take place in mid to late October.  Weather changes quickly in the mountains so it is critical to be prepared.    You will need your hunter safety card to purchase a tag in Colorado.  Also remember that you must have hunter orange hat and vest.
